The Life of Artist Jackson Pollock

An American painter who was an exponential leader of Abstract Expressionism, an art movement characterized by the spontaneous gestures in paint commonly termed “action painting.” In his lifetime he received wide commentary and serious recognition for the radical “poured” or “drip” technique he utilized to create his major artworks. From his contemporaries, he was respected for his highly personal and totally infallible commitment to painting. His art had huge impact on his contemporaries and on many following art movements in the States. He is also one of the first American painters to be recognized in his life and after death as a peer of 20th-century European masters in modern art.

Early life and work
Paul Jackson Pollock was the fifth and youngest son of Stella May McClure and LeRoy Pollock, who were both of Scotch-Irish descent (LeRoy’s surname was McCoy previous to his adoption around 1890 by a family named Pollock) and he was born and grew up in Iowa. The family moved from Cody, Wyoming, 11 months after Jackson’s birth; he would know Cody only through family photographs. In the next 16 years the Pollocks lived in California and Arizona, though going on to relocate nine times. In 1928 the Pollocks moved to Los Angeles, where the boy enrolled at the Manual Arts High School. In school he was mentored by Frederick John de St. Vrain Schwankovsky, a painter and illustrator who also belonged to the Theosophical Society, a sect promoting metaphysical and occult spirituality. Schwankovsky taught Pollock the basic techniques in drawing and painting, introduced him to advanced trends of European modern art, and encouraged his interest in theosophical writings. At this time, Pollock - who had been raised as an agnostic - attended the camp meetings by the premier messiah of the theosophists, Jiddu Krishnamurti, as he was a close friend of Schwankovsky. Those spiritual explorations permitted him to embrace the theories of the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung and the exploitation of unconscious imagery in his artworks through his career.

In the fall of 1930 Pollock followed his brother Charles who in 1922 had left home to study art in NYC, and enrolled with the Art Students League with his brother’s teacher, the regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton. (Jackson dropped his Christian name, Paul, about his time in New York.) He studied life drawing, painting, and composition with Benton for the next 2 and a half years, leaving in the early half of 1933. For the subsequent two years Pollock lived in poverty, originally with Charles and, by fall of 1934, with his brother Sanford. He then shared an apartment in Greenwich Village with Sanford and his wife until 1942.

Pollock was employed by the WPA Federal Art Project in the 1935 fall as an easel painter. The position showed him monetary security during the last years of the Great Depression as well as the ability to further his art. From his study with Benton through 1938, Pollock’s painting was heavily formed by the compositional methods and regionalist subject matter of his teacher and by the poetically expressionist vision of the American painter Albert Pinkham Ryder. It involved mostly small landscapes and figurative scenes for example Going West (1934–35), in which Pollock utilized motifs inspired from photos of his birthplace, Cody.

In 1937 Pollock began psychiatric treatment for alcoholism, and he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1938, which caused him to be institutionalized for about four months. After these experiences, his work became semiabstract and showed the assimilation of motifs from the modern Spanish artists Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, as well as the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco. Jungian symbolism and the Surrealist exploration of the unconscious also influenced his works of this period; indeed, from 1939 through 1941 he was in treatment with two successive Jungian psychoanalysts who used Pollock’s own drawings in the therapy sessions.

What is Action painting?

Action painting is a direct, instinctive, and especially dynamic branch of painting that consists of the erratic application of fast paced, extensive brushstrokes and the chance effects of dripping or spilling paint onto the work. The term was labelled by the American art critic Harold Rosenberg in order to characterize the pieces by a group of American Abstract Expressionists (see Abstract Expressionism) who had been using the method from about 1950. Action painting is separate from the carefully preconceived paintings of the “abstract imagists” and “colour-field” painters, which constitutes the other large direction found in Abstract Expressionism and is parallelable to Action painting only in their shared absolute dedication to unrestricted personal expression free of all traditional aesthetic or social values.

The art of the Action painters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Bradley Walker Tomlin, and Jack Tworkov portray the significance of the “automatic” techniques that developed in Europe in the 1920s and ’30s by the Surrealists. While Surrealist automatism (q.v.), which consisted of scribblings performed without the artist’s conscious design, was conceptually used to bring out unconscious associations in the viewer, the automatic intent of the Action painters was primarily conceived as a way by which to give the artist’s instinctive creative forces freedom and of revealing these forces directly to the viewer. In Action painting, the act itself being the purity of the artist’s literal point of contact with his canvas, was as significant as the completed artwork.

It is generally recognized that Jackson Pollock’s abstract drip paintings, executed from 1947, struck the new era of the bolder, gestural techniques that were particular to Action painting. The speedy brushstrokes of de Kooning’s “Woman” series, begun in the early fifties, successfully transgressed a deliciously emotive, expressive style. Action painting had major importance in the 1950s in Abstract Expressionism, with the most significant art movement transgressing in the United States. By the 1960s, however, leadership of the movement had shifted to the colour-field and abstract imagist painters, who in the sixties pushed against the irrationality of the Action painters.
